Working the "Nightshift"
Posted On 10/22/2009 18:01:53 by administrator

I am on the nightshift again this week once again! It seems that sometime I just cannot get my biological clock to adjust to the time change and I fall back into the routine of sleeping in the afternoon and staying up all night!  I worked the "swing shift" for too many years and I just seem to perk up around 6pm when the sun goes down! I know that  there have been many studies done about those of us who work nights on a regular basis and that we suffer from stress far more than the "9 to fivers" but to me I think I personally like the quiet the night brings.  I like to end my night by watching the sun come up over the mountains and then wind down for sleep.

I like to clean house at night, wash clothes and even grocery shop at midnight!  Perhaps I was a vampire in another life!  I love the daytime also but I am just more productive at night.

I find the world does not tolerate "nightowls" that well however.  I get really cranky with telemarketers who call me during the day and neighbors who pop in at 10 expecting to chat!  I am not very happy when I have to entertain others when I am dreaming of climbing in my bed!

Working at home has great advantages but most of the time you really have to let others know that you are truly working!  I have friends who call me all the time and interrupt my work.  I have had to be really firm with some and let them know I cannot talk when I am working.  Some understand but some get huffy as if I am really just finding excuses not to talk to them.  I have had others call me lazy because I sleep in the daytime and somehow that seems "lazy" to them even though they fail to realize I have spent 10 hours working during the night hours.

My family has become accustomed to my odd hours of working and find the best way to contact me is through email for I really do keep an eye on it each day.

I would be interested in hearing how others here deal with working the odd hours and how they deal with those who do not really believe they have a "real" job.  Let me know what means you use to cope with working at night and dealing with your kids etc.  It was difficult for me when I had young kids and had to work nights for their schedules all revolved around the daylight hours.  Sometimes the school would call me and I was sleeping in the day which really made eyebrows raise with the counselors at the school.  I guess they figured you should be sitting by the phone just waiting for a call from them no matter what hours you worked.

I am working the "night shift" tonight and I will be here throughout the night on the chatline if you want to chat a bit.  If you want to call me and see I am on "arrange a call" on Keen please sign in for it probably means I have other calls or taking a short break.

Blessings to all this day and I wish you joy in all that you do.

oh another thought, for those who cannot be considerate of your time working, during certain hours, you might say automatically, I would love to talk to you how about time X or time X?  What would work for you?  I have issues with this because sometimes I don't have the energy to sit and talk but I do try to ask when is a better time I call you, right now is not working for me. Or lol, I have my ringer off, get voice messages and return the calls when I am ready to do so. My real friends know the score.

I do this as well!!! It is indeed odd to be up and totally awake when the rest of the world sleeps. To be honest,I have always been a nightowl and it started back when I was a little kid. I even use to get up at 2-3am and read a book.  My mom had said I couldn't watch tv, because that would wake the house up but I could read quietly lol. I tried so hard, but I was bored a lot!

I also find because of pain issues I do sleep better in the am, after everyone else is getting up. I get tired around 5am and sleep much better before noon. I don't know why this is, it just is. Less pain when I wake up, maybe its the night air change? the morning air is more moist? I don't know.

Dr Wayne Dryer has noted that there is a particular time, everyone wakes up, like 3:30 am.  He states that pple wake up often at the same exact time and it signifys the time we can be most creative in any art, such as painting or writing. He says that this is the time we are closest to our creator. I do believe that because I also have found that I do better, psychically, online or any energy way of communicating, when things are quieter and calmer. Sometimes I feel like, online, it is way too much for me.

Things I have learned to do is, turn off the ringer on the phone, when I am at optimal sleep mode. This has helped me immensely because the more rest I get the better I feel as far as medications and pain. Lets add better activity then when awake. I have a sign on my front door that says "no solititations!".  Otherwise I get church visitors, politians visiting exct.  Charlie has said it is unnessasary for me to answer the door anyway in the daytime, since I am disabled and alone. He has a great sense of protection in that area, which is not bad to have, as I never considered it. I make apts later in the day, or afternoons. I try to do them before the work crowd gets off to be respectful of those that work. Charlie has to do the shopping, and prefers to do so late at night. So there are many benefits to it.

For those who raise their eyebrows at you, which when I think of literally makes me giggle, lol, I would suggest that there are many many people who work different graveyard shifts. And bless them, we need them to do so. Grocery folks who stock up, mail people who transport out mail, trucking industry, any food industry, any emergency folks, security folks, medical...the list goes on and on. So they can just go lick an egg! lol
